A Study in Colour.

Black-and-white interiors look more formal and serious, and while the environment may look simpler, the mood of the space is more intense making it more emotional. The absence of colour allows concentration on the elements without any distraction.

Blue is a colour often found in nature such as the pale blue of a daytime sky or the rich dark blue of a deep pool of water. It is for this reason perhaps that people often describe the colour blue as calm and serene. Yet as a cool colour, blue can sometimes seem icy, distant, or even cold.

Natural stones like marble and granite are earth elements, according to the ancient philosophy of Feng Shui, they represent strength, stability and good vibes. Bathrooms, where water is the dominating element, can be decorated with stones to bring in harmony and tranquility. Likewise, stones can also be used in fireplace design to complement the fire element.

The colour pink represents compassion, nurturing and love. It relates to unconditional love and understanding, and the giving and receiving of nurturing. A combination of red and white, pink contains the need for action of red, helping it to achieve the potential for success and insight offered by white. It is the passion and power of red softened with the purity, openness and completeness of white. The deeper the pink, the more passion and energy it exhibits.

Pink is feminine and romantic, affectionate and intimate, thoughtful and caring. It tones down the physical passion of red replacing it with a gentle loving energy.

The feelings of natural warmth and comfort that wood elicits in people has the effect of lowering blood pressure and heart rates, reducing stress and anxiety and increasing positive social interactions. Wood products within a room have also been shown to improve indoor air quality by moderating humidity.

White is a colour of protection and encouragement, offering a sense of peace and calm, comfort and hope, helping alleviate emotional upsets. It creates a sense of order and efficiency, a great help if you need to declutter your life.

For some, black evokes positive associations with this colour, including attractiveness and elegance. The colour oozes sophistication. That’s why so many people choose to don black clothing when attending a fancy event. It’s also why high-end brands like Tiffany & Co. and Chanel utilize black in their logos. However, many use the colour black to symbolize all things negative. Throughout history, this somber colour has been tied to death and all things evil and bad. It evokes strong feelings of anger, aggression, fear, and sadness.

Teal blends blue’s tranquil stability with green’s optimism and healing properties. Teal is the colour of restfulness and mental and spiritual balance. The calm shade has a natural dignity that is not contrived or too dominant. Teal’s understated elegance encourages a calm, reflective mood. Brighter teal tones are unique and smart. People who like the colour teal are reliable and independent individuals. They are naturally creative and think for themselves. A teal lover has an even temper and a thoughtful disposition. He or she likely has a talent for mediation and finding a compromise. On the other hand, people who are attracted to teal can be pretentious and prone to overthinking every situation. They may think too much instead of acting on their desires.
